Understanding mature skin

How skin changes from 40 onwards — and what genuinely helps.

From around 40, several converging processes accelerate visible facial ageing. Collagen production declines by approximately 1% per year — meaning the dermis thins and loses its ability to hold moisture and bounce back. Elastin fibres lose their elasticity. The SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) — the structural foundation of the face — weakens, causing the tissue of the mid-face and cheeks to gradually descend. Volume loss in the facial fat pads creates hollowing and shifting of facial contours.

By the 50s, most clients notice a combination of concerns: a softening jawline, jowling, looser neck skin, a dropped brow, fine lines and surface texture changes, and a general loss of luminosity. These are structural changes — and they require structural solutions, not surface-level treatments.

At Radiant Skin House, we work with clients predominantly in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. HIFU is our primary structural lifting treatment for this demographic — it targets the SMAS layer at a depth not commonly reached by surface-level treatments, and many clients report it as the most meaningful non-surgical improvement they have experienced. Combined with SkinPen microneedling for skin quality, CACI Synergy for muscle tone, and Hydro2Facial for hydration and radiance, a bespoke treatment plan can produce comprehensive, natural-looking results for mature skin.

We are honest about what each treatment can and cannot achieve. We never recommend treatments that won’t genuinely benefit you — and we always tell you clearly when we believe a different approach would serve you better.

Our approach to mature skin
We build a bespoke plan — not a one-size-fits-all treatment. At your free consultation, we assess which concerns are most prominent, what each treatment can realistically achieve for your specific skin, and design a plan in order of clinical priority. Honesty is central to how we work.

What concerns most — and which treatment addresses it.

Sagging jawline & jowls

HIFU reaches the SMAS layer — the structural tissue that descends to create jowling — producing genuine jawline definition without surgery.

Loose neck & turkey neck

HIFU tightens the subplatysmal tissue and neck skin, addressing both crepiness and structural neck looseness progressively over 2–3 months.

Brow hooding & heavy lids

HIFU lifts the brow position and opens the eye area — one of the most valued results of a full face HIFU session for clients in their 50s and 60s.

Fine lines & skin texture

SkinPen microneedling stimulates collagen in the dermis, progressively improving skin quality, reducing fine lines, and refining texture over a course of sessions.

Dull, dehydrated skin

Deep multi-step cleansing and hydration treatment — immediate radiance, reduced congestion, and improved overall skin quality. Perfect as a regular maintenance treatment.

Loss of facial tone & contour

Microcurrent technology tones the underlying facial muscles, restoring contour and producing an immediate lifted appearance. Cumulative with a course of treatments.

The primary treatment

Why HIFU is the treatment of choice for structural ageing from 40 onwards.

HIFU — High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound — delivers focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS layer at up to 4.5mm depth. This is the structural layer that gives the face its contour and support. When it weakens, the face descends: jowls form, the jawline softens, the neck loosens, the brow drops. HIFU targets this structural layer rather than just the surface expression of those changes — which is why clients often see a qualitatively different result compared with surface treatments. The treatment is particularly well-suited to clients in their 40s–60s with mild to moderate laxity. A single session produces a gradual lift over 2–3 months as new collagen forms in the treated tissue. Results are natural-looking — colleagues notice that you look well-rested, not that you’ve had a treatment. Results typically last 12–18 months. We are honest about the limits of HIFU. For very advanced laxity with significant hanging tissue, surgery may produce better structural repositioning. We will tell you clearly at consultation if we believe HIFU will produce meaningful results for your specific degree of laxity — and suggest a better alternative if it won’t.

HIFU results by age group
40–49

Clients in their 40s often respond well where laxity is mild to moderate — collagen production is still active and the tissue tends to respond readily. Individual results vary and are discussed honestly at consultation.

50–59
Many clients in their 50s see meaningful structural improvement. Laxity at this stage is typically significant enough to make the treatment worthwhile, and skin can still respond well to collagen stimulation.
60–69
HIFU can still produce noticeable improvement in the 60s, though response may be more gradual. Combining with CACI Synergy and SkinPen often produces the most comprehensive results for this age group.
70+
Individual assessment is essential. We will give you an honest view at consultation of what HIFU is likely to achieve for your specific skin and degree of laxity.

FAQ

Questions from our 40s, 50s and 60s clients.

Everything you need to know before booking your first session in Finchley.
For most women over 50, HIFU is the most clinically significant non-surgical treatment available — because it targets the structural layer (SMAS) that a facelift addresses, producing genuine lifting of the jawline, neck, and brow. SkinPen microneedling addresses fine lines, texture, and acne scars. Hydro2Facial and CACI Synergy maintain skin quality and radiance. The right combination depends on your primary concerns, which we assess honestly at your free consultation.
Yes — HIFU is effective for skin laxity across a wide age range including clients in their 60s. The ideal candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity. For clients in their 60s with significant laxity, HIFU can still produce meaningful improvement, though we will always give an honest assessment at consultation about what results are realistic for your specific skin.
Most clients achieve their desired result with a single HIFU session, regardless of age. Results develop over 2–3 months as new collagen forms. A maintenance session every 12 months is recommended to sustain the lift. The rate of collagen production and tissue response may be slightly slower in clients over 60, but the structural result is still significant.
At Radiant Skin House we take a bespoke approach to mature skin — combining HIFU for structural lifting, SkinPen microneedling for texture and fine lines, CACI Synergy for muscle toning and radiance, and Hydro2Facial for deep hydration. The most appropriate combination depends on your primary concerns. We design a tailored plan at your free consultation.
CACI Synergy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime. Most clients return to normal activities immediately. Occasional mild temporary flushing can occur but typically resolves within a few hours.
