Understanding the technologies

HIFU vs Radiofrequency vs Plasma — what is the difference?

HIFU

Deepest structural lifting
HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS at 4.5mm depth — the structural tissue layer a surgeon tightens during a facelift. No other non-invasive treatment reliably reaches this depth. Best for significant facial lifting, jawline definition, and neck tightening.

Radiofrequency

Collagen stimulation & maintenance

RF devices work at shallower tissue depths, stimulating collagen in the dermis and sub-dermis. Excellent for general skin firming, improving skin quality, and maintaining HIFU results between annual sessions. Also effective for body skin firming and cellulite.

Plasma

Targeted superficial tightening
Plasma treats the skin surface directly, contracting and resurfacing the skin. Most effective for smaller areas with surface laxity — eyelid skin, fine neck crepiness, shallow wrinkles. Can be combined with HIFU for a comprehensive approach addressing both structural and surface changes.

Mature skin

Skin tightening in your 40s, 50s and 60s.

Treatment selection for skin laxity depends far more on the degree and type of laxity than on age alone. A client in their early 40s with significant structural descent may be a better HIFU candidate than a client in their 50s with primarily surface crepiness — and vice versa. What matters is an honest assessment of what is actually happening structurally and at the skin surface in the specific area being treated. That said, our client base is predominantly in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and we have particular experience designing treatment plans for mature skin. HIFU is our primary structural lifting treatment for this demographic. Many clients in their 50s and 60s combine HIFU with regular Lipofirm RF maintenance and a course of SkinPen microneedling for skin quality — producing a comprehensive, natural-looking result that addresses both structure and surface. We are always honest about what each treatment can realistically achieve for a given degree of laxity. If we believe surgery would produce a better result than non-surgical treatment for your specific situation, we will tell you. Traditional clinics using a single Nd:YAG system achieve safe treatment for dark skin — but sacrifice some of the efficacy that Alexandrite delivers for lighter skin types. The Splendor X’s BLEND X® technology allows us to adjust the proportion of each wavelength for every individual client, optimising both safety and results in a way that simply isn’t possible with a single-wavelength device.

Early 40s

First signs of jawline softening and brow descent. HIFU produces excellent results at this stage — collagen response is still strong and laxity is typically mild to moderate.

Late 40s – 50s

Jowling visible, neck loosening, midface descending. Full face and neck HIFU is the most common recommendation. Results are typically significant and last 12–18 months.

60s

HIFU can still produce meaningful improvement. Combining HIFU with Lipofirm RF and SkinPen often produces the most comprehensive result for more advanced laxity.

What to expect

Results, timelines and expectations.

When will I see results?

HIFU results develop over 2–3 months as new collagen forms and the structural tissue lifts gradually from within — not immediately after treatment. Plasma results appear within 4–6 weeks. RF results develop progressively over a course of sessions.

How long does skin tightening last?

HIFU results typically last 12–18 months, with an annual maintenance session recommended. Plasma results are long-lasting (1–2+ years for the areas treated). RF results are best maintained with a regular course approach.

How many sessions will I need?

HIFU typically produces the desired result in a single session with annual maintenance. Plasma may require 1–2 sessions per area. RF/Lipofirm is best used as a course (6–10 sessions) then maintained monthly.

Can treatments be combined?

Yes — and often the most comprehensive result comes from combining technologies. HIFU for structural lifting + Lipofirm RF for maintenance + Plasma for surface crepiness is a well-established combination approach at Radiant Skin House.
FAQ

Skin tightening & lifting — questions answered.

We believe in transparency — here are the answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours isn’t here, just ask.

HIFU is considered the most effective non-surgical treatment for sagging jowls. It targets the SMAS layer — the same structural tissue that descends to create jowling — at 4.5mm depth, stimulating collagen that gradually lifts the tissue back towards its original position. Surface treatments (radiofrequency at shallow depths, topicals, facial massage) cannot reach this structural layer and are therefore less effective for true jowling. A full face and neck HIFU session is the most common recommendation. Your degree of laxity is assessed honestly at your free consultation.

Yes — HIFU is one of the most effective non-surgical options for loose neck skin and turkey neck. It reaches the structural tissue layer beneath the neck skin (including the platysmal layer) and stimulates collagen from within, progressively tightening the skin and smoothing visible banding over 2–3 months. For very surface-level neck crepiness, Plasma treatment is a complementary option. Many clients combine face and neck HIFU in a single session for the most comprehensive result. The degree of improvement depends on the severity of laxity — we assess this honestly at consultation.
For structural facial lifting — jawline, jowls, neck, and brow — HIFU is the most clinically significant non-surgical option because it reaches the SMAS layer that no other non-invasive treatment reliably targets. For surface tightening and crepiness, Plasma and radiofrequency work at shallower depths and are well-suited to smaller areas and surface texture concerns. The right answer depends on the location, degree, and type of laxity — which we assess at your free consultation before recommending anything.
HIFU and radiofrequency are complementary rather than competing. HIFU reaches the deep structural SMAS layer (4.5mm) and is best for significant structural lifting of the jaw, neck, and face. Radiofrequency works at shallower tissue depths and is better suited to surface firming, skin quality improvement, and maintenance between HIFU sessions. For clients who have already had HIFU and want to maintain results, regular Lipofirm RF sessions are an excellent approach. For clients with significant laxity who want structural lifting, HIFU is the appropriate starting point.
HIFU body treatment can produce meaningful improvement in loose abdominal skin — particularly skin that has stretched following weight loss or pregnancy. The results are progressive and natural-looking, developing over 6–12 weeks as new collagen forms. HIFU body is not a substitute for surgery where very significant hanging tissue requires repositioning, but for mild to moderate laxity it is an effective non-surgical option. Lipofirm RF can complement HIFU for generalised body skin firming. We assess each area individually at your consultation.
The type of laxity is the deciding factor. Structural laxity — descended tissue in the face, jaw, and neck — responds best to HIFU because it reaches the structural layer responsible. Surface or shallow laxity — crepiness on the neck, eyelid skin, fine texture changes — is better addressed by Plasma. Generalised skin firmness and maintenance are best suited to radiofrequency. Many clients benefit from a combination. You do not need to know which treatment you need before booking — at your free consultation we assess your degree and type of laxity and recommend honestly.
