About acne scarring

Can acne scars really be improved?

Yes — acne scarring can be significantly improved with the right treatment approach. The extent of improvement depends on the type and depth of the scarring. There are several distinct types: rolling scars (broad, shallow depressions with sloping edges), boxcar scars (defined edges and flat bases), ice-pick scars (deep, narrow channels), and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (red or brown marks that are flat rather than textural). Collagen-remodelling treatments — SkinPen microneedling and Voluderm Fractional RF — are most effective for rolling and boxcar scarring, where the treatment stimulates new collagen to fill in and remodel the depressed areas progressively over a course of sessions. Ice-pick scars are more resistant to all treatments due to their depth. Post-inflammatory pigmentation (marks rather than textural scars) often responds well to Plasma resurfacing alongside appropriate skincare. We never promise that scars can be completely removed — but meaningful, visible improvement is achievable for most clients with mild to moderate scarring over a properly sequenced course of treatment. We assess your scarring type and severity at your free consultation and give you an honest picture of what to expect.
Our approach

What to expect from a Clear & Smooth course.

Clear and smooth skin is rarely achieved in a single session — collagen remodelling is a biological process that takes time. We photograph your skin before your first treatment and at regular intervals throughout your course so improvements can be tracked clearly. Most clients with acne scarring see a meaningful difference after 3 sessions and continue to improve with each additional session. Treatment sessions are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart to allow the skin to complete its healing and collagen response between sessions. Between sessions, a targeted home skincare routine — which we advise on as part of your treatment plan — supports the results achieved in clinic.

FAQ

Acne scars, texture & pores — questions answered.

We believe in transparency — here are the answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours isn’t here, just ask.

The most effective treatment for acne scarring depends on the type and depth of the scars. SkinPen microneedling and Voluderm Fractional RF are our primary recommendations for most types of acne scarring — both stimulate collagen remodelling progressively over a course of sessions. Plasma resurfacing is highly effective for surface-level scarring and post-acne texture changes. For significant or deep scarring, a combination approach over multiple sessions typically produces the best result. We assess the type and severity of your scarring at your free consultation and recommend honestly.
Yes — SkinPen microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for enlarged pores. The controlled micro-injuries stimulate collagen production in the surrounding tissue, which over a course of sessions progressively tightens the walls of the pores and reduces their visible size. Voluderm Fractional RF adds radiofrequency energy to the process and is effective for more significant pore concerns. Results improve with each session and are typically visible from 4–8 weeks after each treatment.
Both are highly effective — the choice depends on the depth and type of scarring. SkinPen is suitable for a wide range of scar types and is particularly well-tolerated with minimal downtime (1–2 days redness). Voluderm adds radiofrequency energy which provides deeper thermal collagen stimulation and may produce more intensive results for deeper or more resistant scarring, but has slightly more downtime (1–3 days). We often recommend starting with SkinPen for milder concerns and progressing to Voluderm for more significant scarring. At consultation we assess your specific scars and advise accordingly.
Most clients see meaningful improvement after 3–6 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Mild to moderate scarring often responds well to 3 sessions. More significant or deeper scarring may benefit from 6 or more. Results are cumulative — each session builds on the collagen remodelling from the previous one. We photograph your skin before treatment so improvements can be tracked clearly over the course.
Yes — SkinPen microneedling is specifically designed for all skin tones, including darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) that carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation with some laser and ablative treatments. We assess your skin tone carefully at consultation and select the most appropriate treatment and settings to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes. Please inform us of any history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when you book.
Downtime varies significantly by treatment. Hydro2Facial has no downtime — skin may be slightly flushed for a few hours. SkinPen typically causes 1–2 days of redness and mild skin sensitivity, similar to mild sunburn. Voluderm Fractional RF causes 1–3 days of redness and a mild sandpaper texture to the skin as the micro-channels heal. Plasma resurfacing has the most significant downtime — small crusts form over the treated area and take 7–10 days to resolve. We discuss downtime in full at your consultation so you can plan accordingly.
