Laser Hair Removal for Dark, Asian & Indian Skin in North London.

A dropped brow position creates a tired, heavy appearance that no eye cream can address. HIFU lifts the brow from within by stimulating the structural tissue beneath — opening the eye area and restoring a more alert, refreshed appearance without surgery.

The science

Why laser now works safely on all skin tones — and why it didn't always.

For years, there was a well-founded concern about laser hair removal for darker skin. Older laser systems — using 755nm Alexandrite and 810nm Diode wavelengths — worked by targeting melanin. The problem was that these shorter wavelengths were strongly absorbed by melanin in the skin’s surface as well as in the hair follicle. For clients with darker skin, significant amounts of energy were absorbed by the skin itself, causing burns, blistering, and hyperpigmentation.

This gave rise to the belief that laser “doesn’t work” or “isn’t safe” for darker skin — a belief that was accurate for that generation of technology, but is no longer true for modern medical-grade systems.

The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength was developed specifically to address this problem. The longer 1064nm wavelength is absorbed by melanin far less efficiently at the skin surface, while still being absorbed effectively deeper in the dermis where the hair follicle sits. This allows the laser to pass through the skin’s surface with minimal absorption and deliver its energy precisely to the follicle — producing effective hair reduction without dangerous heating of the surface skin.

At Radiant Skin House, we use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength as standard for all Fitzpatrick IV–VI clients. Combined with a thorough consultation, skin type assessment, and patch test for every new client, this approach produces safe, effective results for clients of South Asian, Indian, African, Afro-Caribbean, and Middle Eastern heritage — who make up a significant part of the North London community we serve.

Our technology

Why the Splendor X BLEND X® is the right laser for darker skin.

The Splendor X by Lumenis is the world’s first laser to fire both Alexandrite 755nm and Nd:YAG 1064nm simultaneously in adjustable proportions. For clients with darker skin, this means something no single-wavelength system can offer: the safety of Nd:YAG with a precision-calibrated Alexandrite component that boosts efficacy beyond what pure Nd:YAG alone can achieve.

Traditional clinics using a single Nd:YAG system achieve safe treatment for dark skin — but sacrifice some of the efficacy that Alexandrite delivers for lighter skin types. The Splendor X’s BLEND X® technology allows us to adjust the proportion of each wavelength for every individual client, optimising both safety and results in a way that simply isn’t possible with a single-wavelength device.

BLEND X® — adjustable dual wavelength

Nd:YAG dominant for dark skin (safe) with precision Alexandrite component for efficacy boost. Unique to Splendor X.

Square spot — no gaps, complete coverage

Perfect tiling coverage with no missed follicles — particularly important for complete clearance on darker skin.

FDA-cleared for Fitzpatrick I–VI

Clinically validated for all skin types including deep brown and Black skin. Patch test and full assessment before every first session.

Our process

What happens at your consultation for darker skin.

01

Skin type assessment

We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type in person — photographs and self-assessment are not sufficient. Skin tone can vary by area and by season, and we evaluate the specific area to be treated.

02

Hair profile review

We examine the hair colour, coarseness, and density in the treatment area. This determines expected efficacy, number of sessions needed, and realistic results for your specific profile.

03

Laser settings configuration

For Fitzpatrick IV–VI, we configure Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength with energy settings appropriate for your skin. Settings are adjusted conservatively to prioritise safety without sacrificing efficacy.

04

Patch test

We perform a patch test on a small area of the intended treatment zone. You return after 48–72 hours for us to assess the skin response before proceeding to any full treatment session.

I cannot recommend this clinic highly enough for laser hair removal. From the initial consultation through to my latest session, the entire experience has been exceptional. The clinic itself is immaculate, welcoming, and equipped with modern technology that makes appointments quick and surprisingly comfortable. Natalie was brilliant throughout, taking the time to explain the process clearly, checking on my comfort during every stage, and offering practical aftercare advice. I noticed a visible reduction in regrowth after just a couple of sessions, and the results have exceeded my expectations. If you are considering laser treatment, this is definitely the place to go.

Lipoform review Having become a client of Radiant Skin House for manicures a few months back I found myself discussing the beauty treatments they offer with Natalie… As a mid 60’s lady who was concerned about jowls and ‘turkey’ neck I was trying to find what non surgical and non invasive options were available. I try to look after my skin using natural and organic products but, sadly, these cannot prevent all the effects of aging. And so Natalie told me about the Lipoform treatment - it combines radio frequency and electro-stimulation - the idea being to tighten loose and saggy skin, drain blocked lymphatic areas, stimulate collagen and hopefully tone and sculpt the area. Circumstances dictated that I could only book a course of 3 treatments - each one approximately an hour long, over a period of 4 weeks. The treatment itself was mildly uncomfortable, the radio frequency aspect is absolutely fine, its just a mild tingling, but the heat aspect was a little worse - however it was resolved by Natalie changing areas a little more frequently. My skin was a bit red afterwards but this settled down within a few hours. In truth there was a noticeable change after just one treatment - not so much visible in the mirror so much as I could feel my skin was tighter. This continued through the following 2 sessions and now 3 weeks after the last treatment I can definitely feel and see the difference. My skin is much tighter around my neck, my jowls are reduced and my face is less puffy. The ‘turkey’ neck is less pronounced and saggy, but will definitely benefit from further sessions which I am planning to do in a couple of months time. For those unwilling, like me, to undergo surgery (or not financially able) I think that Lipoform is a great solution and would definitely recommend giving it a try.

FAQ

Your questions about laser for darker skin — answered honestly.

Yes — with the right laser technology. Modern medical-grade Nd:YAG 1064nm laser systems are specifically designed for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). The longer 1064nm wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis while significantly reducing surface absorption, allowing the laser to target the hair follicle effectively and safely. At Radiant Skin House, every client with a darker skin tone receives a thorough consultation, a patch test, and treatments configured specifically for their Fitzpatrick type.
Yes. South Asian skin typically falls into Fitzpatrick III–V, and we treat all of these skin types routinely at our Finchley clinic. Many South Asian clients have coarse, dark body hair against a medium-olive skin tone — a profile that responds very well to laser treatment. The key is using the correct wavelength and settings. We use Nd:YAG 1064nm for Fitzpatrick IV–V and perform a patch test before any first session.
Most clients begin to notice neck tightening at 6–8 weeks as the collagen response begins. Full results are typically visible at the 3-month mark. Clients often describe the neck transformation as one of the most striking outcomes — because the neck responds visibly to even modest collagen improvement, the change can be quite dramatic at the 3-month review.
Yes. Black skin (Fitzpatrick V–VI) requires exclusive use of the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength, which we use as standard for these skin types. The 1064nm wavelength bypasses surface melanin in the skin and targets the follicle directly — this is the only approach that is both safe and effective for deep brown and black skin tones. We will never use shorter wavelength lasers on Fitzpatrick V–VI skin.
The number of sessions depends primarily on the contrast between your hair colour and skin tone, and the coarseness of the hair. Many South Asian and Middle Eastern clients — who often have very dark, coarse hair against olive skin — achieve excellent reduction in 6–8 sessions. Clients with less contrast between hair and skin may need more sessions. We will give you a realistic estimate at consultation based on your specific profile.
When the correct laser technology and settings are used, the risk of hyperpigmentation for darker skin types is very low. The risk primarily arises when shorter wavelength lasers — designed for fair skin — are used on darker skin, causing the skin’s surface melanin to absorb too much energy. At Radiant Skin House, we use Nd:YAG 1064nm for darker skin types and perform a patch test to verify safe energy levels for your skin before any full treatment session.
Yes — a patch test is required for all new clients and is particularly important for clients with Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin. The patch test allows us to confirm safe energy settings for your specific skin type and hair profile before performing a full treatment. It is included free at your consultation. We will never skip this step for any client.
Yes. Facial hair on darker skin — particularly on the chin, upper lip, and jaw — is one of the most common treatment requests from South Asian, Middle Eastern, and African clients. The Nd:YAG 1064nm laser treats these areas safely. Facial hair is hormonally driven and may require more sessions than body hair, and some maintenance sessions may be needed long term — we advise honestly at consultation.
Pricing is the same regardless of skin tone — from £40 per session for small areas, £60 for underarms, £80 for bikini line, and from £100 for larger areas like back or chest. A pre-paid course of 6 saves 20%. Full pricing is confirmed at your free consultation and patch test at our Finchley clinic.
